Online Shopping Security
Is As Simple As 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

    By:  Rusty Rose

Security Should Never Be A Problem!

Because almost everyone seems to have a computer, it is surprising that there are still so many people who are afraid to shop online. And who can blame them? With all the scares of identity theft, credit card numbers stolen, personal information hacked right out of their computer, you can't really fault them too much.

But all that is needed for the ultimate protection, is some common sense and a few simple precautions to take and you're safe, even from the most talented hacker. The number one step is:

#1. Don't Put The Information In Your Computer In The First Place!

Why do you need to store personal information in your
computer? There is absolutely no need for it. If you are not in business, who needs your home address, who needs your phone number, who needs your social security number, who needs your credit card number, or anything else about you that is personal...your date of birth, your maiden name
(if you are a married female)....or whether you're married or single; is nobody's business but your own.

#2. Be Creative

But, you say, whenever you join programs like a photo gallery or a gaming subscription, they ask you these questions. They shouldn't. The only thing you should have to provide is a user name (and you can use any name you want-Barbara Streisand's name if that's to you're liking, or a name that you wish you had when you were a child); and a password. The only real information you should give them is your email address. For anything else, I favor creative answers. If you're an old crone like I am, I like the age of 29-if that's what they're asking; so I count back 29 years and that's what I use for my birthdate. My mother's maiden name can be any movie star I happen to like at the time I'm filling out the form. No one has the right to ask you for any personal information, no matter what program you're subscribing to. If you give them creative answers, it's not hurting them since they don't need the information to begin with, and it's keeping your real personal information off the Internet.

Of course, if you're filling out a resume for a job position, that's a different story. Not only do the people who are asking you for this information who are planning to possibly hire you have the right to ask you the questions, but you have the obligation to answer them honestly. But circumstances like this are rare on the Internet and most reputable companies will treat the information with the utmost respect and security. I've never filled in a resume online, but I think when it came to personal questions, I would simply put in "to be given at interview."

#3. Now How Do We Remember All That Creativity?

Now that we have that settled, how are you going to remember all this information. They might come back and ask you you're birthdate as a security provision if you're having any kind of problems with them. Here's the trick. Get yourself a small Rolodex and keep it by your computer. Whenever you join a program, pull out a card from the Rolodex-print the name of the company in capital letters on the top; under that print your UserId (User Name); and under that print your password. In that order. Those three pieces of information will always be on every card. Keep them in the same order each time and then you'll only have to glance at the card for the information. The very next piece of information should be the email address you used if you use more than one account, and lots of people do. Then you can add any other information, if you had to give it. The birthdate you gave them, mother's maiden name, etc.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU STORE ANY OF THIS INFORMATION IN YOUR COMPUTER - INCLUDING YOUR USERID's (USER NAME) AND/OR YOUR PASSWORDS. DO NOT STORE IT IN YOUR EMAIL, EITHER!

Forget the automatic forms that hold your information. Don't use them. Don't use the automatic fill-ins that browsers give you. It's not that difficult or time consuming to type in your name and email address. Do not allow any company to store your credit cards. If you're an online shopper, when you get ready to shop on the Internet, pull the credit card out of your wallet and put it on the desk beside your computer for reference, but don't leave it in any stores, even if they suggest it to make your shopping faster. (I've solved that problem by memorizing my card number. At my age, it wasn't easy. *Grin)

Keep accurate records of your online doings in your Rolodex, not in your computer. If there is someone in your home you don't trust, or a room mate you're not too sure of, keep one of those small telephone address books in your purse, and use that in place of the Rolodex.

Now, what is a hacker going to get out of your computer? Nothing. Even if they hack into Sears records, or Amazon's records, they won't get your information (maybe your address and/or phone number) but that all important information (credit cards, social security numbers, birthdates, etc) will not be available to them, because they won't be there.

#4. Internet and Online Shopping

Now, the crux of the matter in security. There are still many computer users who are afraid to shop online and are afraid to give their credit card numbers online. Well, I have some good news for you.

[First of all, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping online, but don't want to over-extend yourself - get a debit card from your bank. Ask them for one. That way you will only buy what you have money in the bank to cover. Once you get used to shopping online, it is very easy to over-extend yourself if you have a credit card with a large credit line. Almost all online stores now accept debit cards and it really is the best way to shop.]

Make sure the debit card you get is a "major" card like Visa or MasterCard. When you shop, pick out the major or national chain stores to shop in. They are all safe to deal with. Once you get used to the idea, you will find that shopping online with a credit card is much safer than shopping in a store in person. When you put your credit card number in an online store, for instance like Sears, it is immediately encrypted AND IT DOES NOT GO TO SEARS AT ALL. It goes directly (encrypted) into Visa or MasterCard who in turn checks it's validity and then let's Sears know that it is valid. It all takes only a few seconds before anyone has a chance to see it. (This is why I said DO NOT LET THE STORES STORE YOUR CREDIT CARDS!) Now, the only way a hacker can get your card is by hacking into Visa or MasterCard and, in that case, this would include the card you use at in-store shopping as well as online shopping. I think that would take some doing, anyway. Even if a hacker could do it, with the millions upon millions of cards they have, the odds of yours being chosen would be like trying to win the lottery, pretty slim.

Now compare online shopping to shopping at the store in person. The sales clerk not only sees your card, but has a copy of the number in the sales receipt which is stored there by her cash register for any clerk to see until the receipts are sent to the office. And then, how many people in the office see your receipt with your credit card number on it? Several handlers probably, the computer operator who posts your sales transaction, the accountant who handles the books, etc. Now what seems safer to you?

#5. Now The Last Piece of Information To Complete Your Security-Safe Passwords

The tendency is to find a really neat password and use it for everything, mainly because it's easier to remember. No. No. No. If someone cracks your password, they can get into everything. You need to have unique passwords, especially if you bank online, have a stock plan or retirement plans online or some program that is really sensitive. I have a couple of doozies for my bank account and my PayPal account. I can never remember them and look them up each time I use them. It must be unique and should be at least 8 digits long, preferably 12 with both letters and numbers. No problem with trying to remember them anymore because of the "neat little trick" I showed you using the Rolodex. Keep the Rolodex right by your computer and it just takes a second to flip to the one you're looking for. You can go really wild now with your creativity, because you are no longer going to be using the same password. You're going to make up new ones everytime you join something on the Internet. Nothing will protect you more than this. This is the way to create passwords.

Right now, on my desk, is a gas bill, 3 cookies and a calendar. Okay, how about gas3calendar. There's 12 letters. Lets make it more secure. My gas bill is $20.93. Not usually that low. How about 293gas3calen. Now there's a 12 digit password that would be hard to crack. There is nothing in there that relates to you, your dog, your birthdate (I don't think), your house number, your zip code. Now that's a perfect password. You could even go further and add 4 numbers to the end of it and make it a 16 digit password. Most passwords are case sensitive and you could capitalize a letter, for instance you could make that last one 293gAs3caLen. Let me give you one more example. On my rug, I have a paisley pattern and I would guess it repeats itself about 100 plus times. Each pattern has 5 loops on it. How about 100plus5paisley. That has 15 letters in it. Or 100plUs5paIsleY. Another very difficult one for someone to crack. On my kitchen counter I have 3 eggs sitting waiting to be scrambled and a picture of my daughter with her 2 children. She's got a bright pink blouse on. You could make several passwords from that. egGs33pinK242524. 3 eggs, 3 children, (33) pink blouse and their ages all "scrambled" up. I don't know about you, but I've never heard of pink eggs before. I doubt too many other people have either, except maybe Dr. Seuss. Be very careful when you print the password into your Rolodex between the small letters and the capital letters. I think you've got the idea.

Now, you can go out and shop online with all the confidence in the world. Remember to stick to brand name stores and what better place than at the Brand Name Shopping Mall where you can find Macy's, Sears, Montgomery Ward's, Targets, Wal-Mart's, etc.-almost 60 stores all in one place. You can do comparison shopping, discount shopping with Wal-Mart's and Overstock and take advantage of all the sales. A lot of the stores have free shipping and many of them have on-line sales and buys that you can't get in person in the actual stores. Take advantage of them.

IT REALLY IS, EASY!

For an example, let's say you want to purchase a treadmill-where to go??

Click on http://brandnameshoppingmall.com

Let's try Sears-the bottom half of the page lists almost 60 brand name stores alphabetically. Sears begins with "S" so down near the bottom-yep, there it is. Sears.

Click on it.

Takes you to the "Sales and Promotional" page. Check the bottom for sales on treadmills. Okay, then click into the Sears store from almost anywhere on the "Sales and Promotional" page. Now, put treadmill in the Sears search engine.

Nice treadmill. Is it the best at the best price?

Use your back button on your browser and go back to the main page. Click on Wal-Mart. Check out their treadmills. They have a large selection.

Use your back browser and go back to main page. Click on The Sharper Image. Check out their sales. Love Handler? Nice exercise machine. Click on it. Now that's interesting.

You just performed three successful operations, online shopping, comparison shopping and discount shopping online. You've been to three major stores, checked on their treadmills and have compared prices and styles and, in all those treadmills you've seen, probably found the one you wanted, all in less than 10 minutes.

Try doing that in your car. It would take you all day to do what you just did in 10 minutes.

Put http://brandnameshoppingmall.com in your home page. Save yourself time, money, gas and avoid waiting in lines next time you want to buy something. With almost 60 brand name stores, you won't have any trouble finding what you're looking for right away in this one place.

A lot of the stores give free shipping and many of them have sales that you can't get in-store, only online. Take advantage of them.

ARCADE GAMES-WHO'S PLAYING THEM?

When you think of Arcade Games, a picture of young
children around the ages of 8 and up comes to my mind.
Does it yours? Well, you're in for a surprise. How about a
35 year old woman? A 60 year old woman?

According to RealArcade, who is a leader in the Online
Internet Arcade games, the demographic for their
website are women from the age of 35 to the age of 60.
They claim that 70% of their online players are in this
group age category. It is difficult to bring the image to
my mind of a 60 year old woman blasting away at a lineup
of army tanks, and shooting down as many of them as she
can within a certain limit of time.

Out of curiosity, I went into their site and they have a lot
more than just "shoot 'em up" games. As a Senior Citizen
myself, I soon found myself playing some of the games
and enjoying them immensely. Maybe it isn't so outrageous
after all. I actually enjoyed some of the "shoot-'em-up games,
as well. They have all kinds of puzzling puzzler games and
awesome action games. You also get a free present of a choice
of two games in return for joining their 30 day-free trial. I
think I'm going to sign up. Have I just become a statistic in
the demographic of arcade games?

Talk about puzzling; I'm still agog over the demographic of
woman between the ages of 35 and 60 being the dominant
factor in the world of Arcade games. You'll find a RealArcade
website at

you can comment on almost anything; within reason, of course;
about your thoughts, anecdotes, funny stories; especially if they
relate to shopping (but relating to shopping is not a prerequisite.)

We think you'll find it full of "good stuff" and enjoyable reading as
well as helping you tremendously in your shopping.

Thanksgiving will be here in just a few days and, as you know,
the first frenzied shopping weekend follows right behind it.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to get your shopping done really
early this year and then relax and, for once, really enjoy the
Holiday Season yourself?

Not only do you still have time to do that, but you can get all your
shopping done online, in one place with all the brand name stores
you usually shop in, all in alphabetical order so you can find the

store you want in a New York second. Whew, what a long sentence.

Not through yet. AND------you'll have the newsletter to help you
locate those sales and specials.

Send us an email, and we'll put you on our subscribers' list. Put

BNSM in the subject line. Won't cost you a thing.

BRAND NAME SHOPPING MALL ADDS EIGHT (8) NEW STORES

Arcadia, Calif. (November 5, 2006) – Brand Name Shopping Mall announced today that they
have added 8 new stores to its Mall, bringing the total number of stores in the Mall to forty-five (45). Rusty Rose, owner and President of the Brand Name Shopping Mall, not only wants the customers to feel at home, but to have the biggest variety of stores that they can get anywhere on the Internet. More stores are planned for the future.

Appetizers To Go:
From the Seu Mei Shrimp and Pork Dumplings to the Cream Cheese Chocolate Puffs, Appetizers To Go's motto is "For the Hard to Gift-Give Gourmet Appetizers." It is a real time-saver for busy households catering parties during the Holiday Season.

Figi's:
This store is a valuable addition to the Mall. It has long been known for it's high quality products and it's been around since 1944. John Figi was originally a cheese inspector in Wisconsin and wondered one day if he could sell the delicious Wisconsin cheeses through the mail. His first advertising campaign brought in 43 orders and he had no way to deliver them to the Post Office. He actually borrowed a child's little red coaster wagon, packed all 43 packages on the wagon and walked them to the Post Office. With that kind of determination, you know his business had to be a success. John Figi's motto is: "Sell good gifts, at good prices with satisfaction guaranteed... no matter what! Follow this rule and customers will come to you."

Foot Locker:
Foot Locker was first introduced in 1977 with Lady Foot Locker being launched in 1982 and Kid's Foot Locker in 1987. With their eye on the highest quality, they have become the world's national market leaders in athletic footwear in the world today.

Gift Baskets:
Gift Baskets' motto is "For any reason...or no reason at all." It's always nice to be remembered by your friends and relatives for no reason at all...that is really a special gift...but we've got lots of reasons to give Gift Baskets with the Holiday Season upon us. Brand Naame Shopping Mall felt that the timing was perfect for this addition, but is also looking forward to it's popularity the year 'round.

Lucky Brand Jeans:
An unusual addition as its owners are steeped in the Rock'n Roll era and their website actually presents a show of it's clothes. Talk about window shopping. If you're into Rock'n Roll, you're going to enjoy the website's presentation. The two owners of this store, Gene Montesano and Barry Perlman, not only have a terrific sense of humour, but are very unique in their styling and presentations. They also came up with the idea of wearing black tie and tux jackets with jeans to its annual Black Tie & Blue Jeans Gala. Since its inception in 1996, the Foundation has been successful in raising approximately $6 million dollars for numerous children’s charities including: Smile Train, Camp Sundown, Island Dolphin Care, Shane’s Inspiration and The Bridge School.

Mrs. Field's Cookies:
Mrs. Debbie Field's was told repeatedly by her friends and relatives that she was crazy; that no one could make a business out of selling nothing but cookies. But in August of 1977, Mrs. Field's opened her first "cookie store" in Palo Alto, California and the rest is history. A very plucky young mother, with a great determination of will, and an insistence of quality, Brand Name Shopping Mall is proud to add Mrs. Field's Cookies to it's Mall.

Overstock.com:
This is your "outlet store online" where the prices are a real discount and supported by a flat rate shipping fee of $2.95. Shipping and handling charges are a real drawback to online shopping. A flat rate of $2.95 is a huge plus with products that are already discounted. They also have an Overstock Auction Store which you can enter from their main store at the Brand Name Shopping Mall.com.

Things Remembered:
Even the name of this addition is nostalgic and as Rusty Rose says, "At my age, I am definitely into nostalgia, as you've probably guessed with the addition of Lucky Brand Jeans. I have a beautiful pendulum clock that was given to me at my retirement and it brings back such wonderful memories. A really thoughtful gift that will long be remembered. A real treasure." Things Remembered's motto is "Things Engraved Are Things Remembered." And I'm sure the "Things Remembered" include great friends and great memories. "A small gift that's engraved, is long remembered."

About Brand Name Shopping Mall
Brand Name Shopping Mall (www.brandnameshoppingmall.com), is the Internets's newest alphabetized shopping mall, offering brand name stores to internet shoppers with images of some of the stores entrances so first time online shoppers can feel comfortable. It even includes the U.S. Postal Service store from their Washington, D.C. Internet website as well as a Western Union. The President of the Brand Name Shopping Mall feels that, to the contrary belief that women indulge in a lot of window shopping, feels that when a woman goes shopping, she generally knows what she wants and in what store to get it. With the easy navigation of the Mall, women will be able to find the store they want in a "New York minute" or as in this case of being on the Internet, a "New York second." Being the "Newest Mall on the Internet, Brand Name Shopping Mall's ratings are nothing spectacular, yet; but that probably won't be the case for long, as they are certainly making quite a presence on the Internet.

Brand Name Shopping Mall

Highlights From Brand Name Shopping Mall (11/02/06)

I would like to see everyone stand up and clap to welcome five brand new stores (count them - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) to The Brand Name Shopping Mall.

Please welcome the following:
Appetizers To Go
Gift Baskets
Lucky Brand Jeans
Overstock.com

Appetizers To Go:

I'm embarrassed to say that I found myself drooling while I was designing this page. I'm trying to decide which made me drool the most - the Seu Mei Shrimp and Pork Dumplings or the Cream Cheese Chocolate Puffs. Appetizers To Go's motto is "For the Hard to Gift-Give Gourmet Appetizers." I cannot think of a more appetizing gift. Yum.

Gift Baskets:

Gift Baskets' motto is "For any reason...or no reason at all." It's always nice to be remembered by your friends and relatives for no reason at all...that is really a special gift...but we've got lots of reasons to give Gift Baskets with the Holiday Season upon us.

Lucky Brand Jeans:

Now this store is a treat just to go window shopping. If you're into Rock'n Roll, you're going to love these clothes. The two owners of this store, Gene and Barry, not only have a terrific sense of humour, but are very unique in their stylings and presentations. They are also the culprits who came up with the idea of wearing black tie, tux coats with jeans to their Lucky Brand Foundation gala charity balls for disabled children. You can't miss out on seeing their presentations of the Lucky Brand Jeans Show on their Lucky Brand Jeans website.

Overstock.com:

This is your "outlet store online" where the prices are a real discount and supported by a flat rate shipping fee of $2.95. As you know, shipping and handling charges are a real drawback to online shopping and I am always on the look out for free shipping. A flat rate of $2.95 is a huge savings in online shopping. They also have an Overstock Auction Store which you can enter from their main store at the Brand Name Shopping Mall.com.

Things Remembered:

Now this is one of my favorite stores. Even the name is attractive to me. (Especially at my age-grin.) My best friend, Darlene, bought me the most beautiful clock for my retirement at Things Remembered, and everytime my daughter comes over, she stands there and gazes at it. Do you think my daughter covets my beautiful clock? It's been engraved with the date of my retirement and a beautiful sentiment-which is personal. A really treasured gift. Things Remembered's motto is "Things Engraved Are Things Remembered." And I'm sure the "Things Remembered" include great friends and great memories. What a great idea gift. My motto is "A small gift that's engraved, is long remembered."

Brand Name Shopping Mall

Highlights From Brand Name Shopping Mall (10/25/06)

I received this in my email yesterday and I was so impressed with
this poem, I decided to forego the Malls regular highlights and print
this instead.

I hope you're as impressed with this poem as I was.

MONSTERS AND THE WEAK

The sun beat like a hammer, not a cloud was in the sky.
The mid-day air ran thick with dust, my throat was parched and dry.
With microphone clutched tight in hand and cameraman in tow,
I ducked beneath a fallen roof, surprised to hear "stay low."

My eyes blinked several times before in shadow I could see,
The figure stretched across the rubble, steps away from me.
He wore a cloak of burlap strips, all shades of grey and brown,
That hung in tatters till he seemed to melt into the ground.

He never turned his head or took his eye from off the scope
But pointed through the broken wall and down the rocky slope.
"About eight hundred yards," he said, his whispered words concise,
"beneath the baggy jacket he is wearing a device."

A chill ran up my spine despite the swelter of the heat,
"You think he's gonna set it off along the crowded street?"
The sniper gave a weary sigh and said "I wouldn't doubt it,"
"unless there's something this old gun and I can do about it."

A thunderclap, a tongue of flame, the still abruptly shattered;
While citizens that walked the street were just as quickly scattered.
Till only one remained, a body crumpled on the ground,
The threat to oh so many ended by a single round.

And yet the sniper had no cheer, no hint of any gloat,
Instead he pulled a logbook out and quietly he wrote.
"Hey, I could put you on TV, that shot was quite a story!"
But he surprised me once again -- "I got no wish for glory."

"Are you for real?" I asked in awe, "You don't want fame or credit?"
He looked at me with saddened eyes and said "you just don't get it."
"You see that shot-up length of wall, the one without a door?
Before a mortar hit, it used to be a grocery store."

"But don't go thinking that to bomb a store is all that cruel,
The rubble just across the street -- it used to be a school.
The little kids played soccer in the field out by the road,"
His head hung low, "They never thought a car would just explode."

"As bad as all this is though, it could be a whole lot worse,"
He swallowed hard, the words came from his mouth just like a curse.
"Today the fight's on foreign land, on streets that aren't my own,
I'm here today 'cause if I fail, the next fight's back at home."

"And I won't let my Safeway burn, my neighbors dead inside,
Don't wanna get a call from school that says my daughter died;
I pray that not a one of them will know the things I see,
Nor have the work of terrorists etched in their memory."

"So you can keep your trophies and your fleeting bit of fame,
I don't care if I make the news, or if they speak my name."
He glanced toward the camera and his brow began to knot,
"If you're looking for a story, why not give this one a shot."

"Just tell the truth of what you see, without the slant or spin;
That most of us are OK and we're coming home again.
And why not tell our folks back home about the good we've done,
How when they see Americans, the kids come at a run."

You tell 'em what it means to folks here just to speak their mind,
Without the fear that tyranny is just a step behind;
Describe the desert miles they walk in their first chance to vote,
Or ask a soldier if he's proud, I'm sure you'll get a quote."

He turned and slid the rifle in a drag bag thickly padded,
Then looked again with eyes of steel as quietly he added;
"And maybe just remind the few, if ill of us they speak,
That we are all that stands between the monsters and the weak."

Anyone who hasn't heard the name "Sears" is obviously not from
this planet, or was just born. When Sears runs a sale, it's usually
a doozy and this one is no exception. My favorite is the KitchenAid
Artisan Mixer. (Last one listed.) Now that is a very, sharp-looking
appliance and would look beautiful under anyone's Christmas tree.
I would love to have that one myself. Hint. Hint. *Grin.
